About Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the most widely used and recognized therapeutic intervention of the Chinese traditional medicine in the West.

Practice

The practice of acupuncture is to generate the act of stimulation, by means of needles, on certain specific sites of the skin, mucous membranes or subcutaneous tissues of the human body with the aim of improving health or relieving pain.

Objectives

The acupuncturist can also use other stimulation acts as heat (moxibustion), pressure (suction cups, massage tuina, acupressure) or the addition of electrical stimulation (electro-acupuncture) to accomplish the same objectives.

Methods

The selection and stimulation methods are determined by the acupuncturist and are based on the client's state of health, energy balance and palpation of the zones and meridians involved.

Goal

The stimulation of points, whether on the meridian routes or on points known as out-of-meridians, as well as their combinations, are intended to promote the vitality of a region, organ or specific function of the organization. The goal of selecting these acupuncture points is to act most effectively on a set of symptoms and on the initial cause of the imbalance.

FAQ

At a first meeting, the acupuncturist makes a thorough evaluation of your condition by doing a detailed interview as well as by palpating your pulse and observing your tongue. It then establishes an energy diagnosis and a treatment plan. He will then do the treatment by placing needles at the points selected for your condition. An acupuncturist can also use other techniques, such as massage, suction cups or moxibustion.
The needles are fine. The introduction of acupuncture needles gives a sensation that resembles a mosquito bite. There is little or no pain in inserting the needles. Patients report a feeling of well-being during and after the sessions as well as a more regenerative sleep and an improvement in their energy level.
The measures taken in 2003 by the Ordre des acupuncteurs du Québec make it almost impossible to transmit a disease through an acupuncture needle. In fact, the Order now obliges all acupuncturists practicing in Quebec to use sterile needles for single use. There is therefore virtually no risk of infection.
  • - Please bring a copy of your relevant medical record and a list of your medications, if possible;
  • - Please do not brush your tongue;
  • - Please do not come with an empty stomach;
  • - Wear loose clothing during treatment;
  • - Please allow 1 hour and 30 minutes for your first visit and 1 hour for subsequent visits.
Yes, children can receive acupuncture. Often they have excellent results with acupuncture treatment. However, in cases where children are uncomfortable on needles, the acupuncturist may choose to use a treatment without needles.
This depends on the severity, the chronicity of the disease and the vitality of the patient. For acute problems such as high fever or acute low back pain, three to five treatments may be necessary to perceive a difference. In cases of chronic problems, degenerative diseases and complex cases, longer treatment sessions may be necessary.

For new patients

For better clinical outcomes, I strongly suggest new patients have at least two treatments per week for the first two to three weeks. When your condition becomes stable, you can receive acupuncture treatment per week to reinforce the results.

The reasons are as follows:

- If the interval between each treatment is too long, the results accumulated during the previous treatments could be attenuated. This means that the overall recovery time required will be even longer. Therefore, sessions twice a week for two consecutive weeks are preferable to treatments once a week for four weeks.

- It is important to intervene at an early stage of the disease in order to avoid any progression.

To treat hay fever or other allergies: Preventive care should start one month before the allergy season.

To treat SPM, irregular menstruation and cramps during menstruation: treatment should begin five days before the expected date of menstruation.

To maintain general health and preventive care: Occasional acupuncture treatments are required, as is the periodic maintenance of your car.
